░░ Das Balance Festival startete 2018 in Leipzig als Plattform für progressive Clubkultur und transformative Politik, um marginalisierte, queere und feministische Stimmen in der Clubkultur zu stärken.
░░ Mit einem interdisziplinären Ansatz aus Musik, Kunst und Diskurs bringt das Festival Künstler*innen zusammen, die an den Schnittstellen dieser Felder arbeiten. Balance untersucht, welches Potenzial Clubkultur für Communities und das politische Bewusstsein in Zeiten globaler Krisen haben kann. Dabei interessiert uns die Rolle der Clubkultur für Community-Building und Countercultures, insbesondere in Ostdeutschland.
░░ Spannungen steigen weltweit, und was einst eine Gegenkultur gewesen ist, ist heute hyperreal und mainstream. Nach der Festivaledition 2022 „In:Visibilities“, gehen wir in diesem Jahr mit „Tensions“ über internalisierte (kapitalistische) Krisen hinaus. Wir verfolgen die Spannungen, die unsere Beziehungen und Communities umstrukturieren, und stellen die Frage: Wie finden wir wieder zueinander? Unsere Welt ist von Kriegen und dem Kampf gegen Ungleichheiten geprägt. Wie verändern all diese Spannungen unsere Club- und Community-Spaces? Und wie können wir trotz allem gemeinsam wachsen?
░░ Bei der Festivalplanung haben wir uns von einer gewissen Unsicherheit leiten lassen – von politischen Spannungen innerhalb aktivistischer Gruppen bis hin zum weltweiten Aufschwung des Populismus und seiner Anhänger*innen. Deutschland, insbesondere Sachsen, steht vor einer wachsenden Bedrohung von rechts. In einer Zeit, in der faschistische Gruppen schamlos öffentliche Räume einnehmen, marginalisierte Menschen ausgrenzen und jene zum Schweigen bringen wollen, die sich wehren, sehen wir unsere Kulturabeit als politisches Werkzeug und als Gegenbewegung gegen Faschismus, Rassismus, Antisemitismus und Queerfeindlichkeit in all ihren Facetten. Wir stellen uns entschieden gegen die zunehmenden faschistischen und rückschrittlichen Kräfte, die Sachsen und Leipzig bedrohen. Wir erkennen darin einen Teil eines globalen Trends, der nicht nur Communities, sondern auch Kulturarbeit trifft. Die jüngsten Kürzungen von Fördermitteln, der kulturelle Aderlass und die Angriffe auf Kulturschaffende und Künstler*innen sehen wir als direkte Bedrohung für das demokratische und politische Leben. Kulturarbeit ist politisch, Clubkultur ist politisch, und eure Unterstützung des Festivals und unabhängiger Strukturen in Sachsen ist ein klares Zeichen dafür.

Clubkultur ist oft aus solchen Spannungen entstanden und war schon immer einen Zufluchtsort, ein Ort, an dem wir einer anderen Realität begegnen können – abseits der alltäglichen Dystopien. Als Kollektiv glauben wir, dass es jetzt wichtiger denn je ist, Clubs als Orte der Gegenkultur für queere, feministische, antikapitalistische und dekoloniale Utopien zurückzuerobern – unberührt von der Kommerzialisierung des Nachtlebens. Selbstisolierung und Cliquenmentalitäten werden keine Spannungen lösen. Unsere Festivaledition 2024 ruft dazu auf, wieder zusammenzukommen, gemeinsam zu feiern, zu diskutieren und zu viben. Ihr seid eingeladen, vom 1. bis 3. November 2024 mit uns im UT Connewitz und DUQO zu feiern und tagsüber in der Garage Ost das eintrittsfreie Diskurs- und Workshopprogramm zu besuchen.

░░Balance Festival was launched in 2018 in Leipzig as an interface of progressive club culture and transformative politics to highlight marginalized, queer and feminist voices in club culture.
░░With an interdisciplinary approach that includes music, art and discourse, the festival features artists working on the intersections of these fields, Balance explores the potential of club culture for communities and political consciousness in times of global crisis. In this context, Balance aims to address the impact of club culture for community building and counterculture, especially in East Germany.
░░Tensions are growing worldwide and what was once counterculture has become hyperreal and absorbed into the mainstream. Following the festivals’ edition of 2022 „In:Visibilities“, this year’s theme „Tensions“ moves beyond internalized (capitalist) crises. It instead traces tensions reshaping our connections and communities today and asks the question: How to re-connect? Our world is marked by war and struggles against inequality. How do these tensions redefine our club and community spaces? And how can we still learn and grow in connectivity?
░░While planning the festival, we were guided by uncertainty – from political tensions within activist groups to the global rise of populist politics and its supporters. Germany, as well as Saxony in particular, faces the growing threat of the far right. In these times, when fascist mobs shamelessly invade our public spaces, othering the marginalized and marginalizing those who speak out, we view our cultural work as a political tool and a mobilizing counterculture against fascism, racism, antisemitism, and queerphobia in all their forms. We stand firmly against the rising tide of fascist and regressive forces surrounding Saxony and Leipzig. This we recognize as part of a global trend that not only impacts communities, but also cultural work. We view the recent funding cuts, cultural erasure, and attacks on cultural workers and artists as direct threats to democratic and political life. Cultural work is inherently political, club culture is political, and your support of the festival and independent structures in Saxony is a stand for this.
░░The 2024 festival edition is set to be intense, shaped by the endless tensions of our time. Club culture has emerged often from tensions to offer a refuge, a place to face a reality different from everyday dystopias. As a collective, we believe that now, more than ever, we need to reclaim clubs as true spaces of counterculture for queer, feminist, anti-capitalist and decolonial utopias, untouched by the commodification of nightlife. We believe that self-isolation and cliquish behavior won’t resolve any tensions. Our 2024 festival edition is a call to reconnect, party, discuss and vibe together. Let’s come together, from November 1st to 3rd, 2024, to explore and take over various spaces. PERSPECTIVES aims to promote cultural, political, and social participation of migrant/migrantized individuals in Leipzig-Grünau and Leipzig. Through its work at the neighborhood, city, and network levels, the project enhances visibility, opens up new social spaces, and ensures the quality of integrative projects. With projects such as “narratif” magazine, they provide impulses for new structures.

For Balance Festival, PERSPECTIVES has created the video piece “WHAT DO YOU DESIRE? WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?” that will be shown continuously as part of the discourse program in our festival center GARAGE Ost.

PERSPECTIVES hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die kulturelle, politische und gesellschaftliche Teilhabe von migrantischen und migrantisch markierten Personen in Leipzig-Grünau und Leipzig zu fördern. Mit verschiedenster Arbeit im Quartier, der Stadt und in Netzwerken schafft das Projekt Sichtbarkeit, erschließt neue soziale Räume und sichert die Qualität integrativer Projekte. Mit Projekten wie dem „narratif” Magazin setzt es zudem Impulse für neue Strukturen und gesellschaftliche Transformation. Für das Balance Festival hat PERSPECTIVES die Videoarbeit mit dem Titel „WHAT DO YOU DESIRE? WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?” produziert, die fortlaufend als Teil des Diskursprogramms in unserem Festivalcenter GARAGE OST gezeigt werden.

What is your ideal vision of club culture? What are the obstacles and tensions towards this? And how do you navigate through them? In this video piece, the Leipzig based project “PERSPECTIVES” will ask protagonists about their club utopia. The interviewees are connected to the Leipzig club scene in one way or the other - as dancers, DJs, club operators or indirectly as visitors. With the short portraits, newly produced for Balance Festival 2024, the project aims to foster a discourse about possibilities and difficulties in the local club culture, especially for marginalized people.

Wie sieht deine ideale Vision von Clubkultur aus? Welche Hürden und Spannungen stehen dieser im Weg? Und wie gehst du mit diesen um? In dieser Videoarbeit befragt das Leipziger Projekt „PERSPECTIVES” verschiedene Akteur*innen zu ihren Clubutopien. Die Interviewten sind auf die ein oder andere Art und Weise Teil der Leipziger Clubszene – als Tänzer*innen, DJs, Clubbetreiber*innen oder Besucher*innen. Gallanegra
If you have seen a very well styled person on the street of Leipzig, chances are high that this person was wearing a design by Gallanegra. Gallanegra (Melisa Lantadilla) is a textile artist from Chile based in Leipzig. Her style is a unique recreation of used fabrics with a sense for fashion and edge like few other local designers. With over 10 years of experience in the fashion and design industry, Gallanegra has worked as a costume designer for various artistic projects, always standing out for her originality and commitment to using recycled materials. In addition to her creative work, Gallanegra teaches private sewing and upcycling classes at her studio, sharing her knowledge and passion for sustainable fashion. Zudem unterrichtet sie Nähen und Upcycling und teilt so ihr Wissen und ihre Liebe für nachhaltige Fashion. Teresa Schönherr
Seid ihr auch so in unser wildes Festivaldesign verliebt wie wir? Dann dürft ihr auf keinen Fall diesen Künstlerin verpassen. Teresa Schönherr ist eine Multimedia Artist und Grafik Designerin aus Leipzig, die in diesem Jahr bereits zum zweiten Mal für die visuelle Identität des Balance Festivals verantwortlich ist. In ihren vielschichtigen Designs mischt sie Storytelling, Typographie, Spekulation und partizipative Elemente und erzählt so durch visuelle Elemente eine oft politische Geschichte. Ihre Arbeit wurde bereits vom Coveal Magazin, IDEA Mag Japan, Eye on Design oder dem PAGE Magazin gefeatured. Derzeit arbeitet sie verstärkt mit Materialien wie Ton und Stoffen und kombiniert darin die haptische, analoge Handhabung mit digitalen Möglichkeiten. Wie das geht und dabei auch noch ein richtig geiles Design herauskommt? Das lernt ihr bei ihrem Workshop „Deconstructed DIY Fashion: Upcycling mit Schoenherr und Gallanegra!”.

For the second time now, she is responsible for the visual identity of Balance Festival. With her mesmerizing designs, she mixes storytelling, typography, speculation and participatory elements, telling a story that can often be read as political. Her work has been featured by Coveal Magazine, IDEA Mag Japan, Eye on Design or PAGE Magazine. Currently, Schönherr works with clay and fabrics, combining the haptic, analogue practice with the immensity of the digital. How she creates a design out of this? If you have ever seen Schoenherr and Gallanegra on the streets of Leipzig, you know that their style is uniquely stunning! Wanna know how they do this? Join them for their workshop at our festival center. They will teach you all about sustainable fashion – but in a sexy way. The workshop invites everyone who is interested in upcycling, no matter your age and skill level. Just come as you are and trust the process! In this workshop, you'll have the opportunity to create your very own Schoenherr x Gallanegra x Balance Club Culture garment, using a mix of recycled materials and pre-printed fabrics with designs of this years’ Balance Festival design, created by Teresa Schönherr. We will provide sewing machines and all necessary tools to bring your ideas to life, with guidance and support from Gallanegra, a renowned costume designer and upcycling specialist. You can bring your own old clothes and your home sewing machine if you have/want to.

Whitney Wey
Whitney Wei is one of the few journalists in Germany that knows club culture in and out. She is the former Editor-in-Chief of the electronic music platform “Resident Advisor”, and prior to that, was the Editor-in-Chief of “Telecom Electronic Beats”. She has written dozens of pieces about club culture, the dance music scene and various artists, including articles for The Guardian, Vogue US, Highsnobiety and Pitchfork. With her expertise, she will analyze the current situation of club culture for Balance Club / Culture Festival and find answers to the question if raving is still progressive. For our festival opening, Wei teams up with a visual artist for this commissioned work.

Techno has not been underground for a long time now. However, the recent developments after the pandemic have shaken the subcultural agents of the scene even harder than before. TikTok Raves have become a trend, dance moves are being taught by self-proclaimed “techno warriors” in short clips, the music of choice by young ravers are beats that follow the same simple pattern. At the same time, more and more clubs are closing due to financial and political tensions. Progressive Club Culture and its spaces have changed drastically during the past years. How do these changes influence communities? What does the TikTok hype do to the ideas of counterculture? What happens to concepts of Awareness and sensitivity towards discrimination if club culture is overly commercialized or spaces are shut down completely? Can queer people and BIPoCs find safer spaces within these developments? And how can raving still be progressive and a place for counter cultural resistance?

For Balance Festival, we invited the journalist and nightlife expert Whitney Wei to share her analysis about the current state of progressive club culture. A visual artist will transform this content into a digital work of art. We will premiere this commissioned work as a digital festival opening on Friday, 1st of November.

Techno ist schon lange nicht mehr Underground. Doch die jüngsten Entwicklungen nach der Pandemie haben die subkulturellen Akteur*innen der Szene noch stärker erschüttert als zuvor. TikTok-Raves sind zum Trend geworden, Moves werden in kurzen Clips von selbsternannten „Techno-Warriors“ beigebracht, und der Sound junger Raver*innen besteht aus Beats, die dem immergleichen einfachen Muster folgen. Gleichzeitig schließen immer mehr Clubs aufgrund von finanziellen und politischen Spannungen. Die progressive Clubkultur und ihre Räume haben sich in den letzten Jahren drastisch verändert. Wie beeinflussen diese Veränderungen die Communities? Was bewirkt der TikTok-Hype für die Ideen der Gegenkultur? Was passiert mit Konzepten von Awareness und Sensibilität gegenüber Diskriminierung, wenn die Clubkultur übermäßig kommerzialisiert wird oder Räume komplett geschlossen werden? Für das Balance Festival haben wir die Journalistin und Nightlife-Expertin Whitney Wei eingeladen, um ihre Analyse über den aktuellen Zustand der progressiven Clubkultur zu teilen. Eine visuelle Künstlerin wird dieses Thema in ein digitales Kunstwerk transformieren. Diese Auftragsarbeit wird als Festivalauftakt am Freitag, den 1. November erstmals digital gezeigt.
Dornika
Dornika is our queerfeminist, sexpositive hero. Not only do we love Dornikas’ energetic vibe and extravagant style, but also her outstanding mixture of pop, feminist rage punk and sexy rap. The Iranian-American artist, trained in classical music, brings high energy to the stage while shining as a drag and performance artist. Their work is inherently political, confronting state violence, sexism or racism and attacking these through genre bending bass sounds made for the dancefloor. Dornika is our festivals’ favorite newcomer that we are sure we will hear much more about in the near future. Expect nothing less than an empowering tornado that will heaten up the historical UT Connewitz.

Deutsche Laichen
The band Deutsche Laichen from Göttingen/Berlin are queer-feminist icons, and rightfully so. Not only have they written demo and party anthems with songs like "My Cunt My Business" and "Emanzenlesbenschlampe," but their EP “Team Scheiße”, addressing the punk scene's failure to confront its own racism and the widespread silence following the Hanau shooting, was an important political statement in the alternative music scene. In 2024, the band released the song "Schmutzig," which addresses the political despair of millennial punks. We are certain that Deutsche Laichen will make the venerable UT Connewitz properly dirty.

Die Göttinger Band Deutsche Laichen sind queer-feministische Icons und das zu Recht. Nicht nur haben sie mit Songs wie „My Cunt My Business" oder „Emanzenlesbenschlampe“ Demo- und Partysmasher für die Ewigkeit geschrieben, auch ihre EP „Team Scheiße" über den Nicht-Umgang der Punkszene mit den eigenen Rassismen und der weitreichenden Stille nach Hanau war ein wichtiges politisches Statement in der alternativen Musikszene. 2024 hat die Band den Song „Schmutzig“ veröffentlicht, der die politische Verzweiflung der Millennial-Punks thematisiert. Deutsche Laichen machen das altehrwürdige UT Connewitz ordentlich schmutzig – davon sind wir überzeugt.
Catnapp
Heavy bass, distorted melodies and an unforgettable digitally altered voice: Catnapp is an artist that has been on our festival wishlist for a long time. Her sound has always challenged avant garde electronic music in its norms, being heavily influenced by genres such as HipHop and DrumnBass. Since 2010, Catnapp plays a crucial part in the electronic livemusic scene, partly because the Argentinian producer and vocalist never stops to develop her sound further. To make a crowd go wild, many DJs trust her heavy bass dancefloor bangers – while at the same time Catnapp proved with her 2022 album “Trust” that she is skilled in many more genres from dreamy hyperpop to weirdcore-experiments. Her live shows are a pleasure that will suck you into an audiovisual unforgettable and enchanting experience.

Nazanin Noori
The Iranian artist Nazanin Noori will make you dream. The multidisciplinary sound artist melts various soundscapes into a mesmerizing installation that will blend in the old theater space of UT Connewitz as if it has never been different. Her melodic soundscapes integrate sound, space, sculpture and poetry into an audible, immersive storytelling. Noori is also known for her theater compositions and modern performance compositions. We are thrilled to have her for a live set she herself calls “Ambient Hardcore.”

Die multidisziplinäre Soundkünstlerin verbindet verschiedene Klanglandschaften zu einer faszinierenden Installation, die sich nahtlos in den alten Theatersaal des UT Connewitz einfügen wird, als wäre es nie anders gewesen. Ihre Arbeiten integrieren Sound, Raum, Skulptur und Poesie zu einem hörbaren, immersiven Erzählerlebnis. Noori ist auch für ihre Theaterkompositionen und modernen Performance-Kompositionen bekannt. Wir freuen uns sehr, sie für ein Live-Set dabei zu haben, das sie selbst „Ambient Hardcore“ nennt.

Bianca Ludewig
Bianca Ludewig is a cultural scientist, cultural worker, music journalist, and DJ. Her research interests include club culture, sound studies, festival studies, gender and diversity, digitalization, working conditions in the cultural industry, and the commercialization of art and culture. She might be the only academic that has ever written a book about Gabber and Breakcore in Berlin - an analysis that she presented for the 2020 Web-Edition of Balance Festival. We are very happy that Bianca Ludewig is now joining the festival IRL, ready to discuss “Rooms for Resistance: An (incomplete) history of counterculture in the club scene”.

Bianca Ludewig ist Kulturwissenschaftlerin, Kulturarbeiterin, Musikjournalistin und DJ. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen Clubkultur, Sound Studies, Festival Studies, Geschlechter- und Diversitätsfragen, Digitalisierung, Arbeitsbedingungen in der Kulturbranche und die Kommerzialisierung von Kunst und Kultur. Ludewig ist wahrscheinlich die erste und einzige Akademikerin, die je ein Buch über Gabber und Breakcore in Berlin geschrieben hat – eine Analyse, die sie bereits in der Web-Edition des Balance Festivals 2020 präsentieren konnte. Was können wir aus den emanzipatorischen und gegenkulturellen Praktiken der Vergangenheit lernen, um nachhaltige Strategien für die Gegenwart zu entwickeln? Rave Culture war immer wieder auch Gegenkultur zu gesellschaftlichen Normen und Unterdrückung, war Raum für Kritik und Selbstorganisation. Mit diesem Vortrag wollen wir einen Blick in die Geschichte werfen, um unsere eigenen subversiven Ideen anzukurbeln. Kulturwissenschaftlerin Bianca Ludewig stellt euch ausgewählte historische Beispiele vor, in denen emanzipatorische und widerständige Praktiken im Rahmen von Techno, Rave und Clubkultur erprobt wurden. Angefangen in den USA mit Disco, House und Detroit Techno als Widerstand gegen Diskriminierung und Rassismus, über das Free Party Movement in Großbritannien als Gegenbewegung zum Thatcherismus, das eng mit der Entstehung von Free Tekno und Teknivals in Europa verbunden ist, bis zu Demo-Raves in Deutschland gegen Gentrifizierung und Neoliberalismus.

An (incomplete) history of counterculture in the club scene

What can we learn from the emancipatory and countercultural practices of the past to develop sustainable strategies for the present? Rave culture has repeatedly served as a counterculture to societal norms and oppression, providing space for critique and self-organization. In this lecture, we will take a look at history to stimulate our own subversive ideas. Cultural scholar Bianca Ludewig will present selected historical examples where emancipatory and resistant practices were tested within techno, rave, and club culture. This includes the origins in the USA with disco, house, and Detroit techno as resistance against discrimination and racism, the Free Party Movement in the UK as a counter-movement to Thatcherism, closely linked to the emergence of Free Tekno and Teknivals in Europe, and demo-raves in Germany against gentrification and neoliberalism.

Avril Stormy Unger aka Chutney Mary is a performance and live artist with a multi sensory approach and affinity toward experience based pieces. Her DJ-sets are sexy, housy, electropop mixes designed to make you dance. For our festival, Chutney Mary will not only perform as a DJ, but also invite you to her very own queer Charades, an interactive show where she will share her experiences as a queer community organizer in a playful and empowering way. For Chutney Mary, carework, co-creation and community are crucial to her Artistic practice – and we love that!

Abilaschan Balamuraley has been a resident of Goethe-Institut in Mumbai and Goa, India, for Balance Club / Culture Festival in 2023. As a result of this research trip on local club scenes and queer nightlife networks, invitations to the festival were extended to the up-and-coming young rapper Kinari from Delhi and the community organizer Avril Stormy Unger from Goa.

Miguel Cuba aka Big Honey is a DJ, curator and event manager that plays a crucial part in Leipzigs club scene. A consistent focus in his work is creating platforms for marginalized groups. He was part of the Leipzig collective “Music Of Color” and supports collectives like “True Colours”, a local ballroom collective that does important work for the queer/trans and BiPoC community. He currently works as a booker at “Institut fuer Zukunft”. Miguel Cuba will take part in our panel “Bridging tensions: How can club culture be in solidarity and resistance amidst tensions” and discuss difficulties, strategies and hopes for a collective counterculture.

There is tension in the club culture - politically, economically and in terms of spaces. The reality of a crisis-ridden capitalist society presents significant challenges to subversive efforts. More and more clubs and spaces are closing, and fewer countercultural, emancipatory concepts find room to exist. In this panel, we want to discuss key questions of an emancipatory club culture under difficult conditions, linking local perspectives with international experiences.

How sustainable can a subversive club culture be? Does club culture have to be political – and if so, what does that actually mean? How can communities grow and remain resilient amid tensions? In this conversation, we will focus on strategies to preserve and promote counterculture and communities in different locations, all within the context of a challenging global social reality. We invited speakers from local, self-organized community perspectives, from established institutions, and from the international context – learning how club culture can remain resistant and solidary despite tensions.

Safety Trance
Safety Trance, aka Cardopusher, is a producer and DJ who has been under the radar for too long but has finally gained the recognition he deserves in recent years. From his roots in Venezuela to his current base in Barcelona, Luis Garban's sonic journey began in the early 2000s, drawn by the arcane combo of IDM, jungle, and hardcore swirling through the ether. We are thrilled to have him as part of our club night, as the Latin American DJ has become indispensable in festival and club line-ups worldwide. Starting with breakcore productions, his recent work fuses rave anthems, hardcore, acid, techno, and reggaeton. After contributing production credits as Cardopusher on several tracks on Arca's "KiCk" series like "Prada/Rakata" and "KLK" feat. Rosalía, he brought forth the new moniker of Safety Trance, unveiling the audio-visual experience “El Alma Que Te Trajo” on Boysnoize Records. He has collaborated with a diverse array of like-minded artists such as Sega Bodega, Isabella Lovestory, DJ Florentino, LSDXOXO, Virgen María ans VTSS. His deep knowledge of various dance genres creates a dynamic dancefloor atmosphere, heavily influenced by his Latin heritage and urge to blend music genres without mercy to make you dance.

Safety Trance, aka Cardopusher, ist ein Produzent und DJ, der zwar schon lange Musik macht, jedoch erst in den vergangenen Jahren die Anerkennung bekommen hat, die er verdient. Ursprünglich aus Venezuela kommend, begann die musikalische Entwicklung des heute in Barcelona lebenden Luis Garban bereits in den frühen 2000er Jahren, in der vor allem IDM, Junge und Hardcore eine Anziehungskraft auf ihn ausübten. Zuletzt war der lateinamerikanische DJ und Producer Teil von internationalen Festivals und Club-Lineups und wir freuen uns sehr, dass er bei unserer Clubnacht spielen wird. Begonnen hat Safety Trance unter dem Namen „Cardopusher” mit Breakcore-Produktionen. Heute sind seine Produktionen und Sets eine Mischung aus Rave-Hymnen, Hardcore, Acid, Techno und Reggaeton – stark beeinflusst von lateinamerikanischen Sounds. Nach Co-Produktionen als Cardopusher bei mehreren Tracks von Arcas „KiCk“-Serie, wie „Prada/Rakata“ und „KLK“ feat. Rosalía, brachte er sein neues Alias Safety Trance hervor und veröffentlichte die EP „El Alma Que Te Trajo” auf Boysnoize Records. ILOVDADDYZ ist aus der Leipziger Technoszene nicht mehr wegzudenken. Mit einer Mischung aus funky hard-groove, hartem Techno und Industrial hat sich ILOVDADDYZ einen Platz in der Clubszene Leipzigs und darüber hinaus gemacht. tracing NYMPHxFaun is a collective art project about current and earlier queer sensuality and erotics between performance art and activism. Through video pieces, the collective explores how the normative matrix in cultural spaces can be challenged by breaking taboos using pleasure, enjoyment and queerness. Six trans artists produced four video works, named "cruising," "tracing," "sensing," and "reflux” in which they challenge the normative fetishization and shaming of queer pleasure and present new perspectives. We are happy to be able to show their work in a screening and discuss the questions they raised with two of the artists afterwards.

tracing NYMPHxFaun ist ein kollektives Kunstprojekt über gegenwärtige und vergangene queere Sinnlichkeit und Erotik zwischen Performancekunst und Aktivismus. "We, the party scene, rarely talk about grief," says filmmaker Sarnt Utamachote. Their short film “I don’t want to be just a memory”, that premiered at Berlinale 2024, tells a queer story of grief. Fellow members of the Berlin queer community come together to grieve friends lost to substance abuse, mental health crises, and the loss of urban safe spaces. Through personal stories and club scene critiques, grief becomes a shared support network. Kinari is a newcomer you will have to watch out for. The Delhi-based rapper, by way of Tamil Nadu, is renowned for her hard-hitting lyrics and cinematic production. Whip-smart, sexy and funny, her music draws from gaana beats, vintage Bollywood glamour, and heavy-hitting trap. Her debut full-length album “Kattar Kinnar” was released independently April 2024. Kinari's music is a celebration of the present. Balance Festival will be Kinaris first live show outside of India, and we’re incredibly happy that we can showcase this artist that has just recently been featured by Elle Magazine by describing her work as “Queer hip-hop with a side of sass, very intentionally made for queer pleasure”. Yes please, we want that sass and queer pleasure!

Abilaschan Balamuraley is the producer and host of the "Maangai Podcast," a community platform amplifying queer South Asian perspectives in the German-speaking world, as well as the "Queer Frequency Podcast." Dey has also served as a host for the queer and post-migrant educational collective "erklär mir mal…". In addition to podcasting, Abilaschan is an active diversity trainer and community facilitator within Berlin's club scene. Currently, dey is pursuing a master's degree in Art Mediation, "Art in Context," at the Berlin University of the Arts.

In this talk, Berlin-based filmmaker Sarnt Utamachote and Delhi-based rapper Kinari explore how emotions influence their artistic practices, as well as the intersectionalities behind these influences. What is your ideal vision of club culture? What are the obstacles and tensions towards this? And how do you navigate through them? In this video piece, the Leipzig based project “PERSPECTIVES” will ask protagonists about their club utopia. The interviewees are connected to the Leipzig club scene in one way or the other - as dancers, DJs, club operators or indirectly as visitors. With the short portraits, newly produced for Balance Festival 2024, the project aims to foster a discourse about possibilities and difficulties in the local club culture, especially for marginalized people.

Wie sieht deine ideale Vision von Clubkultur aus? Welche Hürden und Spannungen stehen dieser im Weg? Und wie gehst du mit diesen um? In dieser Videoarbeit befragt das Leipziger Projekt „PERSPECTIVES” verschiedene Akteur*innen zu ihren Clubutopien. Die Interviewten sind auf die ein oder andere Art und Weise Teil der Leipziger Clubszene – als Tänzer*innen, DJs, Clubbetreiber*innen oder Besucher*innen. Mit den Kurzportraits, die als Auftragsarbeit speziell für das Balance Festival 2024 produziert werden, will das Projekt den Diskurs über Möglichkeiten und Schwierigkeiten in der lokalen Clubkultur insbesondere für marginalisierte Personen fördern. „PERSPECTIVES” hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die kulturelle, politische und gesellschaftliche Teilhabe von migrantischen und migrantisch markierten Personen in Leipzig-Grünau und Leipzig zu fördern. Join them for their workshop at our festival center. They will teach you all about sustainable fashion – but in a sexy way. The workshop invites everyone who is interested in upcycling, no matter your age and skill level. Just come as you are and trust the process! In this workshop, you'll have the opportunity to create your very own Schoenherr x Gallanegra x Balance Club Culture garment, using a mix of recycled materials and pre-printed fabrics with designs of this years’ Balance Festival design, created by Teresa Schönherr. We will provide sewing machines and all necessary tools to bring your ideas to life, with guidance and support from Gallanegra, a renowned costume designer and upcycling specialist. You can bring your own old clothes and your home sewing machine if you have/want to.

Techno has not been underground for a long time now. However, the recent developments after the pandemic have shaken the subcultural agents of the scene even harder than before. TikTok Raves have become a trend, dance moves are being taught by self-proclaimed “techno warriors” in short clips, the music of choice by young ravers are beats that follow the same simple pattern. At the same time, more and more clubs are closing due to financial and political tensions. Progressive Club Culture and its spaces have changed drastically during the past years. How do these changes influence communities? What does the TikTok hype do to the ideas of counterculture? What happens to concepts of Awareness and sensitivity towards discrimination if club culture is overly commercialized or spaces are shut down completely? Can queer people and BIPoCs find safer spaces within these developments? And how can raving still be progressive and a place for counter cultural resistance?

For Balance Festival, we invited the journalist and nightlife expert Whitney Wei to share her analysis about the current state of progressive club culture. A visual artist will transform this content into a digital work of art. We will premiere this commissioned work as a digital festival opening on Friday, 1st of November.

Was können wir aus den emanzipatorischen und gegenkulturellen Praktiken der Vergangenheit lernen, um nachhaltige Strategien für die Gegenwart zu entwickeln? Rave Culture war immer wieder auch Gegenkultur zu gesellschaftlichen Normen und Unterdrückung, war Raum für Kritik und Selbstorganisation. Mit diesem Vortrag wollen wir einen Blick in die Geschichte werfen, um unsere eigenen subversiven Ideen anzukurbeln. Kulturwissenschaftlerin Bianca Ludewig stellt euch ausgewählte historische Beispiele vor, in denen emanzipatorische und widerständige Praktiken im Rahmen von Techno, Rave und Clubkultur erprobt wurden. An (incomplete) history of counterculture in the club scene

What can we learn from the emancipatory and countercultural practices of the past to develop sustainable strategies for the present? Rave culture has repeatedly served as a counterculture to societal norms and oppression, providing space for critique and self-organization. In this lecture, we will take a look at history to stimulate our own subversive ideas. Cultural scholar Bianca Ludewig will present selected historical examples where emancipatory and resistant practices were tested within techno, rave, and club culture. This includes the origins in the USA with disco, house, and Detroit techno as resistance against discrimination and racism, the Free Party Movement in the UK as a counter-movement to Thatcherism, closely linked to the emergence of Free Tekno and Teknivals in Europe, and demo-raves in Germany against gentrification and neoliberalism.

There is tension in the club culture - politically, economically and in terms of spaces. The reality of a crisis-ridden capitalist society presents significant challenges to subversive efforts. More and more clubs and spaces are closing, and fewer countercultural, emancipatory concepts find room to exist. In this panel, we want to discuss key questions of an emancipatory club culture under difficult conditions, linking local perspectives with international experiences.

How sustainable can a subversive club culture be? Does club culture have to be political – and if so, what does that actually mean? How can communities grow and remain resilient amid tensions? In this conversation, we will focus on strategies to preserve and promote counterculture and communities in different locations, all within the context of a challenging global social reality. We invited speakers from local, self-organized community perspectives, from established institutions, and from the international context – learning how club culture can remain resistant and solidary despite tensions.

"We, the party scene, rarely talk about grief," says filmmaker Sarnt Utamachote. Their short film “I don’t want to be just a memory”, that premiered at Berlinale 2024, tells a queer story of grief. Fellow members of the Berlin queer community come together to grieve friends lost to substance abuse, mental health crises, and the loss of urban safe spaces. Through personal stories and club scene critiques, grief becomes a shared support network. Join us for a special screening with director Sarnt Utamachote and one of the film’s protagonists, followed by a live Q&A.

Sarnt Utamachote is a Southeast Asian nonbinary filmmaker and curator based in Berlin. They have curated multiple exhibitions concerning the Southeast Asian diaspora and activism in divided Germany such as the recent exhibition "In nobody's service" at Galerie Wedding and "Echoes of the Brother Countries" at HKW. They work as a film programmer at XPOSED Queer Film Festival Berlin, Hamburg International Short Film Festival, and at Sinema Transtopia Berlin.

Gallanegra
If you have seen a very well styled person on the street of Leipzig, chances are high that this person was wearing a design by Gallanegra. Gallanegra (Melisa Lantadilla) is a textile artist from Chile based in Leipzig. Her style is a unique recreation of used fabrics with a sense for fashion and edge like few other local designers. With over 10 years of experience in the fashion and design industry, Gallanegra has worked as a costume designer for various artistic projects, always standing out for her originality and commitment to using recycled materials. In addition to her creative work, Gallanegra teaches private sewing and upcycling classes at her studio, sharing her knowledge and passion for sustainable fashion. Habt ihr jemals eine Person in Leipzig gesehen und gedacht: “Wow, was ein geiler Style”? Nun, die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass diese Person ein Design von Gallanegra getragen hat, ist hoch! Teresa Schönherr
Seid ihr auch so in unser wildes Festivaldesign verliebt wie wir? Dann dürft ihr auf keinen Fall diesen Künstlerin verpassen. Teresa Schönherr ist eine Multimedia Artist und Grafik Designerin aus Leipzig, die in diesem Jahr bereits zum zweiten Mal für die visuelle Identität des Balance Festivals verantwortlich ist. In ihren vielschichtigen Designs mischt sie Storytelling, Typographie, Spekulation und partizipative Elemente und erzählt so durch visuelle Elemente eine oft politische Geschichte. Ihre Arbeit wurde bereits vom Coveal Magazin, IDEA Mag Japan, Eye on Design oder dem PAGE Magazin gefeatured. Derzeit arbeitet sie verstärkt mit Materialien wie Ton und Stoffen und kombiniert darin die haptische, analoge Handhabung mit digitalen Möglichkeiten. Whitney Wey
Whitney Wei is one of the few journalists in Germany that knows club culture in and out. She is the former Editor-in-Chief of the electronic music platform “Resident Advisor”, and prior to that, was the Editor-in-Chief of “Telecom Electronic Beats”. She has written dozens of pieces about club culture, the dance music scene and various artists, including articles for The Guardian, Vogue US, Highsnobiety and Pitchfork. With her expertise, she will analyze the current situation of club culture for Balance Club / Culture Festival and find answers to the question if raving is still progressive. For our festival opening, Wei teams up with a visual artist for this commissioned work.

Bianca Ludewig
Bianca Ludewig is a cultural scientist, cultural worker, music journalist, and DJ. Her research interests include club culture, sound studies, festival studies, gender and diversity, digitalization, working conditions in the cultural industry, and the commercialization of art and culture. She might be the only academic that has ever written a book about Gabber and Breakcore in Berlin - an analysis that she presented for the 2020 Web-Edition of Balance Festival. We are very happy that Bianca Ludewig is now joining the festival IRL, ready to discuss “Rooms for Resistance: An (incomplete) history of counterculture in the club scene”.

Bianca Ludewig ist Kulturwissenschaftlerin, Kulturarbeiterin, Musikjournalistin und DJ. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen Clubkultur, Sound Studies, Festival Studies, Geschlechter- und Diversitätsfragen, Digitalisierung, Arbeitsbedingungen in der Kulturbranche und die Kommerzialisierung von Kunst und Kultur. Her DJ-sets are sexy, housy, electropop mixes designed to make you dance. For our festival, Chutney Mary will not only perform as a DJ, but also invite you to her very own queer Charades, an interactive show where she will share her experiences as a queer community organizer in a playful and empowering way. Miguel Cuba
Miguel Cuba aka Big Honey is a DJ, curator and event manager that plays a crucial part in Leipzigs club scene. A consistent focus in his work is creating platforms for marginalized groups. He was part of the Leipzig collective “Music Of Color” and supports collectives like “True Colours”, a local ballroom collective that does important work for the queer/trans and BiPoC community. He currently works as a booker at “Institut fuer Zukunft”. Miguel Cuba will take part in our panel “Bridging tensions: How can club culture be in solidarity and resistance amidst tensions” and discuss difficulties, strategies and hopes for a collective counterculture.

NYMPHxFAUN
tracing NYMPHxFaun is a collective art project about current and earlier queer sensuality and erotics between performance art and activism. Through video pieces, the collective explores how the normative matrix in cultural spaces can be challenged by breaking taboos using pleasure, enjoyment and queerness. Six trans artists produced four video works, named "cruising," "tracing," "sensing," and "reflux” in which they challenge the normative fetishization and shaming of queer pleasure and present new perspectives. We are happy to be able to show their work in a screening and discuss the questions they raised with two of the artists afterwards.

tracing NYMPHxFaun ist ein kollektives Kunstprojekt über gegenwärtige und vergangene queere Sinnlichkeit und Erotik zwischen Performancekunst und Aktivismus. In ihren Videoarbeiten erkundet das Kollektiv, wie die normative Matrix in kulturellen Räumen durch das Brechen von Tabus mittels Lust, Genuss und Queerness herausgefordert werden kann. Sechs trans Künstler*innen haben vier Videoarbeiten mit den Titeln „cruising", „tracing", „sensing" und „reflux" produziert, in denen sie die normative Fetischisierung und Scham des queeren Vergnügens hinterfragen und neue Sichtweisen präsentieren. Wir freuen uns, ihre Arbeiten im Rahmen eines Screenings zeigen zu können und anschließend mit zwei Künstler*innen die aufgeworfenen Fragen zu diskutieren.

Sarnt Utamachote
Sarnt Utamachote is a Southeast Asian nonbinary filmmaker and curator based in Berlin. They have curated multiple exhibitions concerning the Southeast Asian diaspora and activism in divided Germany such as the recent exhibition "In nobody's service" at Galerie Wedding and "Echoes of the Brother Countries" at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. They work as a film programmer at XPOSED Queer Film Festival Berlin, Hamburg International Short Film Festival, and at Sinema Transtopia Berlin. Their recent production “I don’t want to be just a memory” premiered 2024 at Berlinale and started the conversation on (queer) grief within the underground scenes of Berlin.

Kinari
Kinari is a newcomer you will have to watch out for. The Delhi-based rapper, by way of Tamil Nadu, is renowned for her hard-hitting lyrics and cinematic production. Whip-smart, sexy and funny, her music draws from gaana beats, vintage Bollywood glamour, and heavy-hitting trap. Her debut full-length album “Kattar Kinnar” was released independently April 2024. Kinari's music is a celebration of the present. Balance Festival will be Kinaris first live show outside of India, and we’re incredibly happy that we can showcase this artist that has just recently been featured by Elle Magazine by describing her work as “Queer hip-hop with a side of sass, very intentionally made for queer pleasure”. Yes please, we want that sass and queer pleasure!

Abilaschan Balamuraley is the producer and host of the "Maangai Podcast," a community platform amplifying queer South Asian perspectives in the German-speaking world, as well as the "Queer Frequency Podcast." Dey has also served as a host for the queer and post-migrant educational collective "erklär mir mal…". In addition to podcasting, Abilaschan is an active diversity trainer and community facilitator within Berlin's club scene. Currently, dey is pursuing a master's degree in Art Mediation, "Art in Context," at the Berlin University of the Arts.

Dornika
Dornika is our queerfeminist, sexpositive hero. Not only do we love Dornikas’ energetic vibe and extravagant style, but also her outstanding mixture of pop, feminist rage punk and sexy rap. The Iranian-American artist, trained in classical music, brings high energy to the stage while shining as a drag and performance artist. Their work is inherently political, confronting state violence, sexism or racism and attacking these through genre bending bass sounds made for the dancefloor. Dornika is our festivals’ favorite newcomer that we are sure we will hear much more about in the near future. Expect nothing less than an empowering tornado that will heaten up the historical UT Connewitz.

Deutsche Laichen
The band Deutsche Laichen from Göttingen/Berlin are queer-feminist icons, and rightfully so. Not only have they written demo and party anthems with songs like "My Cunt My Business" and "Emanzenlesbenschlampe," but their EP “Team Scheiße”, addressing the punk scene's failure to confront its own racism and the widespread silence following the Hanau shooting, was an important political statement in the alternative music scene. In 2024, the band released the song "Schmutzig," which addresses the political despair of millennial punks. We are certain that Deutsche Laichen will make the venerable UT Connewitz properly dirty.

Die Göttinger Band Deutsche Laichen sind queer-feministische Icons und das zu Recht. Nicht nur haben sie mit Songs wie „My Cunt My Business" oder „Emanzenlesbenschlampe“ Demo- und Partysmasher für die Ewigkeit geschrieben, auch ihre EP „Team Scheiße" über den Nicht-Umgang der Punkszene mit den eigenen Rassismen und der weitreichenden Stille nach Hanau war ein wichtiges politisches Statement in der alternativen Musikszene. 2024 hat die Band den Song „Schmutzig“ veröffentlicht, der die politische Verzweiflung der Millennial-Punks thematisiert. Deutsche Laichen machen das altehrwürdige UT Connewitz ordentlich schmutzig – davon sind wir überzeugt.
Catnapp
Heavy bass, distorted melodies and an unforgettable digitally altered voice: Catnapp is an artist that has been on our festival wishlist for a long time. Her sound has always challenged avant garde electronic music in its norms, being heavily influenced by genres such as HipHop and DrumnBass. Since 2010, Catnapp plays a crucial part in the electronic livemusic scene, partly because the Argentinian producer and vocalist never stops to develop her sound further. To make a crowd go wild, many DJs trust her heavy bass dancefloor bangers – while at the same time Catnapp proved with her 2022 album “Trust” that she is skilled in many more genres from dreamy hyperpop to weirdcore-experiments. Her live shows are a pleasure that will suck you into an audiovisual unforgettable and enchanting experience.

Nazanin Noori
The Iranian artist Nazanin Noori will make you dream. The multidisciplinary sound artist melts various soundscapes into a mesmerizing installation that will blend in the old theater space of UT Connewitz as if it has never been different. Her melodic soundscapes integrate sound, space, sculpture and poetry into an audible, immersive storytelling. Noori is also known for her theater compositions and modern performance compositions. We are thrilled to have her for a live set she herself calls “Ambient Hardcore.”

Die iranische Künstlerin Nazanin Noori lädt zum Träumen ein. Avril Stormy Unger aka Chutney Mary is a performance and live artist with a multi sensory approach and affinity toward experience based pieces. Her DJ-sets are sexy, housy, electropop mixes designed to make you dance. For our festival, Chutney Mary will not only perform as a DJ, but also invite you to her very own queer Charades, an interactive show where she will share her experiences as a queer community organizer in a playful and empowering way. For Chutney Mary, carework, co-creation and community are crucial to her Artistic practice – and we love that!

Safety Trance
Safety Trance, aka Cardopusher, is a producer and DJ who has been under the radar for too long but has finally gained the recognition he deserves in recent years. From his roots in Venezuela to his current base in Barcelona, Luis Garban's sonic journey began in the early 2000s, drawn by the arcane combo of IDM, jungle, and hardcore swirling through the ether. We are thrilled to have him as part of our club night, as the Latin American DJ has become indispensable in festival and club line-ups worldwide. Starting with breakcore productions, his recent work fuses rave anthems, hardcore, acid, techno, and reggaeton. After contributing production credits as Cardopusher on several tracks on Arca's "KiCk" series like "Prada/Rakata" and "KLK" feat. Rosalía, he brought forth the new moniker of Safety Trance, unveiling the audio-visual experience “El Alma Que Te Trajo” on Boysnoize Records. He has collaborated with a diverse array of like-minded artists such as Sega Bodega, Isabella Lovestory, DJ Florentino, LSDXOXO, Virgen María ans VTSS. His deep knowledge of various dance genres creates a dynamic dancefloor atmosphere, heavily influenced by his Latin heritage and urge to blend music genres without mercy to make you dance.

Safety Trance, aka Cardopusher, ist ein Produzent und DJ, der zwar schon lange Musik macht, jedoch erst in den vergangenen Jahren die Anerkennung bekommen hat, die er verdient. Ursprünglich aus Venezuela kommend, begann die musikalische Entwicklung des heute in Barcelona lebenden Luis Garban bereits in den frühen 2000er Jahren, in der vor allem IDM, Junge und Hardcore eine Anziehungskraft auf ihn ausübten. Zuletzt war der lateinamerikanische DJ und Producer Teil von internationalen Festivals und Club-Lineups und wir freuen uns sehr, dass er bei unserer Clubnacht spielen wird. Begonnen hat Safety Trance unter dem Namen „Cardopusher” mit Breakcore-Produktionen. Heute sind seine Produktionen und Sets eine Mischung aus Rave-Hymnen, Hardcore, Acid, Techno und Reggaeton – stark beeinflusst von lateinamerikanischen Sounds. Nach Co-Produktionen als Cardopusher bei mehreren Tracks von Arcas „KiCk“-Serie, wie „Prada/Rakata“ und „KLK“ feat. Rosalía, brachte er sein neues Alias Safety Trance hervor und veröffentlichte die EP „El Alma Que Te Trajo” auf Boysnoize Records. Kollaborationen von Safety Trance reichen von Sega Bodega über Isabella Lovestory, DJ Florentino, LSDXOXO, VTSS oder La Goony Chonga. Mit einer ausgeprägten musikalischen Expertise spielt Safety Trance treibende Sets, mixt Genres ohne Zurückhaltung und bringt euch dabei garantiert zum Tanzen.

ILOVDADDYZ ist aus der Leipziger Technoszene nicht mehr wegzudenken. Mit einer Mischung aus funky hard-groove, hartem Techno und Industrial hat sich ILOVDADDYZ einen Platz in der Clubszene Leipzigs und darüber hinaus gemacht. Angefangen hat die Karriere des*der DJs in Atlanta, Georgia, inspiriert von der Berliner Technokultur. Gabber up with this young talent and expect nothing less than a proper rave. Olmatri is a producer and DJ from Leipzig and resident at “Gabber Industries Berlin”. His productions are heavy rave tunes with gabber, trance and a hint of cute melodies ready to make you hit the floor. Olmatris sets are known to be a unique blend of bass-heavy tracks, rapid tempos, and unexpected silly twists, always pushing boundaries and defying expectations. His contribution to our club night will be intense and heavy - so get ready to rave.

Kinari
Kinari is a newcomer you will have to watch out for. The Delhi-based rapper, by way of Tamil Nadu, is renowned for her hard-hitting lyrics and cinematic production. Whip-smart, sexy and funny, her music draws from gaana beats, vintage Bollywood glamour, and heavy-hitting trap. Her debut full-length album “Kattar Kinnar” was released independently April 2024. Kinari's music is a celebration of the present. Balance Festival will be Kinaris first live show outside of India, and we’re incredibly happy that we can showcase this artist that has just recently been featured by Elle Magazine by describing her work as “Queer hip-hop with a side of sass, very intentionally made for queer pleasure”. Yes please, we want that sass and queer pleasure!

Kinari ist eine Newcomerin, die man nicht verpassen sollte. Die in Delhi lebende Rapperin, ursprünglich aus Tamil Nadu, ist für ihre eindringlichen Texte und ihre fetten Produktionen bekannt. Schlagfertig, sexy und witzig: Kinaris Musik ist vielseitig und von Gaana-Beats, dem Glamour von Vintage-Bollywood und bassigem Trap beeinflusst. 2024 veröffentlichte sie ihr Debütalbum „Kattar Kinnar“ als independent release.
